About Our Antique Print Reproductions
We offer high quality fine art reproductions of many of the original antique prints or maps we sell on our website. We also have an archive of hundreds of sold and unsold images including maps that have been digitally stored as high resolution scans allowing reproduction on demand. A variety of sizes are available proportionate to the original image and for some prints a choice of paper or canvas.
Our fine art prints or "giclee" prints are faithfully reproduced from a high resolution digital scan of the original print. We digitally clean up some image imperfections such as stray marks, tears, fold lines, foxing or staining but we try to maintain all of the original coloring and age toning. Engraving plate lines, paper textures, irregularities from hand drawn lines and other unique original features are all maintained.
The images are printed on heavy weight, archival matte or 100% cotton rag papers (smooth or textured) or archival canvas using UltraChrome™ pigmented inks offering the highest light fastness ratings achievable for exceptional quality, vibrancy and durability. We do not print on glossy poster paper or thin paper. We use only fine art papers that will ensure fine color and detail in our prints.
We are constantly adding new prints to our inventory. Many original antique prints on our website can be reproduced as well, even if they are not listed as a reproduction. If you are looking for something in particular, let us know and we may be able to locate just what you want.
Why do we sell both antique prints and our own fine art Giclee reproductions of antique prints?
Antique prints (pre-1900) are a finite commodity - there are only so many available. They are also unique, representing both history and printmaking artistry. Etchings, engravings, woodcuts, stone lithographs and chromolithographs were all means of producing a memorable print, often printed in black ink and then hand colored in watercolors. These prints were either produced specifically for scientific purposes, the home decoration market or as book, magazine or newspaper illustrations. Many famous artists are represented in these prints: Audubon, Nast, Moran, Durrie, Stuart, Trumbull, Sully, Turner and numerous others. Portraits of eminent men and women, landscapes, natural history, botanicals, architecture and historical scenes are all examples of the antique print genre.
Our reproductions of antique prints are an excellent alternative to the original in many cases, due to either cost or possibly size. Many originals are expensive due to scarcity but our fine art reproductions are faithful to the originals and very affordable. In addition, our fine art Giclee reproductions can be produced in custom sizes and on different media such as paper or canvas.
Make the choice that is right for your needs and your budget. The possibilities are endless!
