Description
Description: Hand colored copper engraving by Elliot from Angelo’s famous fencing manual, L’Ecole des Armes. The Italian fencing master Domenico Angelo Malevolti Tremamondo (1716-1802) arrived in England in 1755 and quickly earned a reputation as a fencing master. As a result he established Angelo’s School of Arms where he taught both fencing and horsemanship. His students included the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York. In 1763 Angelo published L’Ecole des Armes, a fencing book comprised of illustrated plates by famous English artists such as Chamber, Gwyn and Ryland depicting principal fencing positions. The manual and the fencing prints were considered by many the ultimate authority on the art of fencing. This antique print is in very good condition, with excellent and bright coloring, minor age toning and spotting in the outer margins not affecting the images. Clear sharp plate lines. Redhousecollection Watermark is on the digital image only, not on the actual antique print.
