Description: This antique print of a pair of Cooper's Hawks is a first edition royal octavo taken directly from installment or Fascicle #5 with original unbound edge. This fascicle is likely to be one of the very first 500 printed as evidenced by the incorrect titles on plates 21, 22 & 23 which did not correspond to Audubon's text on this hawks (source: Audubon's Great National Work by Ron Tyler). The antique plate is in good condition with age toning to the paper, which is normal for the age of the print. There is a small brown streak just above the upper bird's left wing. Beautiful hand colored stone lithograph with bright true coloring, guaranteed original.
Of the Cooper's Hawk Audubon writes, "It breeds in the mountainous districts of the Middle and Northern States, to which it returns early in spring from the Southern States,.."
Print is sold matted with antique colored archival matting and backing. Included with the antique print is the original text as available, a copy of Audubon's Preface and the Subscribers list from the related installment.
RedHouseCollection watermark is on the digital image only, not on the actual antique print.
