Title: Pigeon Falcon or Pigeon Hawk (male), Plate 21
Artist: John J. Audubon
Publication: Birds of America
Date: Philadelphia: John T. Bowen, 1839-44. First Edition Royal Octavo
Print Type: Hand Colored Stone Lithograph
Condition: VG
Size: 6.75” x 10.75”
Description: This antique print of the Pigeon Hawk is a first edition royal octavo taken directly from installment or Fascicle #5 with original unbound edge. This fascicle is likely to be one of the very first 500 printed as evidenced by the incorrect title, Pigeon Falcon on the plate which does not correspond to Audubon's text on the Pigeon Hawk (source: Audubon's Great National Work by Ron Tyler). The antique plate is in good condition with age toning to the paper, which is normal for the age of the print. There is a faint brown mark just below the plate number on the right and a pin hole just above the lower falcon drawing. Beautiful hand colored stone lithograph with bright true coloring, guaranteed original.
Audubon wrote that the Pigeon Hawks he observed were 13.25" to the tail with a wing span of 26".
Print is sold matted with antique colored archival matting and backing. Included with the antique print is the original text as available, a copy of Audubon's Preface and the Subscribers list from the related installment.
RedHouseCollection watermark is on the digital image only, not on the actual antique print.
