Artist: John J. Audubon

Description: This antique print of the Sparrow Hawk is a first edition royal octavo taken directly from installment or Fascicle #5 with original unbound edge. This fascicle is likely to be one of the very first 500 printed as evidenced by the incorrect title, Sparrow Falcon on the plate which does not correspond to Audubon's text on the Sparrow Hawk (source: Audubon's Great National Work by Ron Tyler). The antique plate is in very good condition with age toning to the paper, which is normal for the age of the print. Beautiful hand colored stone lithograph with bright true coloring, guaranteed original.
Of the Sparrow Falcon Audubon writes, "We have few more beautiful Hawks in the United States than this active little species, and I am sure, none half so abundant. It is found in every district from Louisiana to Maine,.."
Print is sold matted with antique colored archival matting and backing. Included with the antique print is the original text as available, a copy of Audubon's Preface and the Subscribers list from the related installment.
RedHouseCollection watermark is on the digital image only, not on the actual antique print.
