Title: Map of Gettysburg Battlefield, 3rd edition, showing the line of battle the afternoon of July 2, 1863 Artist: Drawn by Capt. William H. Willcox, topographical engineer, 95th NY Infantry, General Reynold’s staff. Date: 1863 Publisher: P.S. Duval & Son, Philadelphia Type of Print: giclee of lithograph (sourced from LOC) Condition: Digitally removed Library stamps in margins and did some general cleaning but kept the overall age toning Original Size: 16 x 19 Description: Topographically very detailed map of Union and Confederate battle lines during the afternoon of the 2nd day of the 3 day battle. This map makes a good companion to Willcox’s map of the battle of Antietam. Similar to that map Willcox’s emphasis here is on topographical detail and battle lines and not on place names. For instance, the 2nd day at Gettysburg evokes the now familiar places known as Culp’s Hill, Devil’s Den, Wheat Field, Peach Orchard, Little Round Top and Slaughter Pen. None of these are indicated on this map. As an interesting side note, Willcox was on the staff of Major General John Reynolds, who was killed by a sniper’s bullet on the first day of battle.
