Title:  Map of Antietam Battlefield, 3rd edition
Artist:  Drawn by Lieutenant William H. Willcox, topographical engineer, 95th NY Infantry, General Doubleday’s staff
Publisher:  P.S. Duval & Son, Philadelphia
Date:  1862
Type of Print:  giclee of lithograph (sourced from LOC)
Condition:  eliminated the LOC stamp in the margin and did some general cleaning but kept the overall age toning and hand written notes in title box lower left (see description below).
Original Size: 16" x 19"
Description:  Topographically very detailed and accurate map of Union and Confederate battle lines on September 17, 1862.  However, it is interesting to note that Willcox’s emphasis was on topography and not place names.  It is difficult to locate famous names associated with this battle such as the Dunker Church and the Sunken Road (later called Bloody Lane as a result of the carnage inflicted there upon the Confederates troops).  Miller’s Cornfield is identified.  This map also has a very interesting handwritten note in the title box lower left.  It reads, “Obtained from Washington and presented to Gen. R.E. Lee by J.E.B. Stuart”.  Stuart was Lee’s famed cavalry commander who was killed in May 1864 at the battle of Yellow Tavern outside Richmond, Va.  So this map was presented to Lee before May 1864 and it came from Washington well before the end of the war.  That is an interesting story in and of itself!  Further, the Union victory (some say it was a draw) paved the way for President Lincoln to issue his Emancipation Proclamation.

Fine art Giclee reproduction print of vintage map is produced on heavy weight, matte finish, archival paper using the finest pigment inks offering excellent color and  light fastness ratings of up to 100 years.  Our maps are digitally retouched as needed but maintain the original age toning and antique nature that makes them wonderful decorative art as well as historical references.

Our maps are enlarge and reduce from the original size and do not distort or resize the image, therefore most prints are not exact standard sizes.  Larger sizes shipped rolled in tube.
