Description: Reproduction Birdseye View map of the City of Montrose, Pennsylvania, the county seat of Susquehanna county in northeast Pennsylvania. Montrose was incorporated from Bridgewater Township as a borough on March 29, 1824. The first courthouse was built in 1813. Montrose at one time had two railroad depots, one for the Lehigh Valley RR, which came from Tunkhannock; and the other for the DL&W RR, which came from Alford. When King Charles II of England granted the area known as Pennsylvania to Connecticut and later to William Penn, he created conflicts among the early settlers. Col. and Brother Barlett Hinds are believed to be the first permanent resident of what is now Montrose.
These historic birdseye maps record the evolution of cities illustrating the development and nature of economic activities, educational and religious facilities, parks, street patterns and widths, and transportation systems. Perspective maps are often not drawn to scale but provide a fascinating glimpse into the history of towns and cities.
