Description:Edward Joseph Lowe (1825-1900) was a renowned English botanist. His fascination with ferns led him to study and paint them throughout the entire 2nd half of the 19th century. His most famous work, Ferns: British and Exotic comprising eight magnificently illustrated volumes of fern prints was published in London by Groombridge and Sons in 1856.These Chromolithograph prints in medium weight paper, were made from engraved woodblocks by A.F. Lyndon and were printed by Benjamin Fawcett, noted for very fine quality color and detail printing, some of the earliest chromolithographic prints.These antique fern prints are of rich green colors, over 140 years old and in very good condition.There is normal toning of the paper due to age.Titles are printed at the bottom of each page and a full text page is included if available.Prints are not trimmed, binding edges are rough.Lowe fern prints are highly collectible.
The first true multicolor printing technique, Chromolithography, was invented around 1830.Previously, prints were colored by hand.With Chromolithographs a printing stone or woodblock was used for each color application.Richly colored prints such as these required extensive work in preparation of the stone block and alignment of the registrations to ensure a clean print.
