Artist’s Comments: This scene inspired me the moment I saw it. I love portraying the wilderness and its inhabitants, and here I found the ideal setting. A cold morning in the north country, the landscape blanketed by an early winter snow, and the woodland bison beginning their slow, laborious journey to winter pastures. It's a long, downhill descent for these stately creatures, but instinct tells them their only hope of survival lies in seeking lower ground. Look closely, and you'll see that other animals have joined this annual migration. With Morning Thunder, I wanted to capture not only the magnificence of nature, but also the tenuous balance of the wildlife and its environment.
About the Artist: Rod Frederick has grown up with animals ... from a menagerie of pets that populated his boyhood home to a combination biology and fine arts degree in college. Born in Salem, Oregon, Rod grew up in Portland. Artistic influences shaped his boyhood - his mother had a degree in fine art and his father, a lawyer, spent weekends at the easel. The Frederick household was always full of various animas, so it was entirely natural for Rod to combine his interest in art and animals into a career as a wildlife artist . Frederick attended Willamette University , majoring in art with a minor in biology. Standing six feet, four inches, he also found time to play forward for the University's basketball team. After completing his schooling, Frederick accepted a variety of commissions that let him to paint classic senses of the northwest. Barns, Covered bridges, mountains, fields and ponds became the focal point of his art, but gradually he worked more and more wildlife into his paintings.
