Title: View of New York Artist/Publisher: John Bachmann, NY Date:1849 Map Type: Reproduction from Original Lithograph Size:30.5” x22” Description: This reproduction of the 1849 view of New York was believed to be the first full scale birdseye view of the city. The original image was 28” x 18.5” which we produced in our large size with plenty of margin for matting and framing.Bachmann had done extensive work in France producing bird’s-eyes and panoramic views and some of the detail is reminiscent of French works like the Views of France. This view of New York is from above Union Square looking south to the shoreline and harbors. Up until this time panoramic maps or city views were drawn from actual vantage points such as a hill or bluff vs. the imagined height of this Birdseye map.
Historic Birdseye maps record the evolution of cities, towns and geographic areas illustrating the development and nature of economic activities, educational and religious facilities, parks, street patterns and widths, and transportation systems.
